Conference on Analgesic Trials
The cost for APS CAT is $150 and includes lunch and refreshments. Preregistration is required. The event is a full day, approximately 8AM-4:30PM.
Join us for the fourth annual APS Conference on Analgesic Trials happening April 3, 2019, one day before the start of the Scientific Meeting at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, WI. This will be chaired and moderated by Neil Singla, MD, APS Clinical Trials special interest group chair and chief scientific officer of Lotus Clinical Research.
Hundreds of pain researchers have attended the past three APS-CAT conferences, discussing design and conduct of analgesic clinical trials with expert panels. Audience feedback has been overwhelmingly positive each year.
APS-CAT 2019 presenters include:
James Campbell, MD
President and CSO, Centrexion Therapeutics
Industry leader perspectives on scientific, regulatory and economic concerns for rapid development of non-opioid analgesics
Robert H. Dworkin, PhD
Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperaitve Medicine, Neurology, and Psychiatry
Title: Clinical Trials of Analgesic Treatments for Chronic Pain
Overview of current issues involving clinical trials of pain treatments
Learning Objectives:
- Issues in the design of clinical trials of analgesic treatments
- Issues in the interpretation of clinical trials of analgesic treatments
Nathaniel Katz, MD
CSO, Analgesic Solutions
Title: The Scientific Basis for Training to Reduce Measurement Error in Clinical Trials
Training has been implemented as a “check box” activity in clinical trials to fulfill perceived regulatory obligations, routine protocol review, and some operational tasks. Analgesic clinical trials have a high failure rate due to a family of sources of measurement error. Training has been found throughout many industry sectors to improve performance problems in workplaces as diverse as battlefields and manufacturing facilities. In this presentation I will review the research literature on training, present the scientific foundations of training as an evidence-based method for reducing measurement error in clinical trials, and summarize training methods shown to lead to performance improvements.
Learning Objectives:
- Think about training as a method for reducing measurement error
- Understand the key elements of training that will improve performance and reduce measurement error

APS-CAT is a full-day conference focused on optimizing the design and conduct of analgesic clinical trials. APS-CAT involves audience members in dialogue with thought leaders in the field to disseminate the latest scientific and regulatory developments and facilitate collaboration. The conference features a panel format, with each presenter speaking for 30 minutes followed by Q & A. Our goal is to maximize the efficiency of analgesic drug development.
You can register for the full APS meeting, which offers four additional days of excellent scientific content, or select “Pre-Con Only” to just attend the CAT preconference.
The goals of this conference are:
- Gather world-renowned experts in clinical trials to convey and analyze current best practices.
- Disseminate the latest scientific and regulatory developments in topics of interest to the analgesic research industry.
- Discuss experimental methods that increase analgesic trial assay sensitivity.
- Involve audience members in dialogue with thought leaders in the field from regulatory bodies, industry, and academia.
- Convene at a familiar venue before the APS Scientific Meeting to facilitate networking and future collaboration.
