American Pain Society Honors Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management Award Recipients
Two U.S. Pain Treatment Centers Honored for Achievements in Multidisciplinary Pain Care
AUSTIN, May 12, 2016 – The American Pain Society (APS), www.americanpainsociety.org, today honored recipients of its annual Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management Awards recognizing the nation’s outstanding pain care centers. Two multidisciplinary pain programs were recognized. They are:
Community-based Program
Cancer Treatment Centers of America Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Atlanta
University-based Program
Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Pain Medicine, Boston
APS established the Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management program in 2006 to increase awareness about teams of health professionals who address critical, sometimes unmet, needs in pain management within their communities. Multidisciplinary programs in the U.S. offering direct patient care in pain management are eligible to apply. A panel of pain management experts judged detailed award applications. Award recipients will be honored today at a reception during the APS Annual Scientific Meeting.
The Clinical Centers of Excellence Awards support the ongoing advocacy mission of APS by showcasing the benefits of the multidisciplinary approach to pain management for providing optimal care for myriad pain conditions. A recurring quality of leading pain programs is success in helping patients enhance their overall function and quality of life by treating the whole person, not just the pain.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America Southeastern Regional Medical Center
The Center’s pain management program is fully integrated and services are tailored for individual patient needs and cancer types. Special attention is devoted to transitions of care from inpatient to outpatient pain management. The multidisciplinary pain team has expertise in anesthesiology,
palliative care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain medicine, psychiatry, psychology, neurosurgery, and social work. The team applies an integrative approach using a variety of modalities to treat and control cancer pain – medications, implanted pain pumps, nerve block therapies, physical therapy acupuncture, massage therapy, and chiropractic treatment.
Massachusetts General Hospital Division of Pain Medicine
The Division of Pain Medicine is a leading multidisciplinary academic pain management facility with strong clinical, educational and research programs. It has received 18 NIH grants and 12 industry and foundation grants. In the last five years, team members have published more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, five books, and numerous book chapters and scientific meeting abstracts.
The Division’s clinical staff is dedicated to collaborating with healthcare providers to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to adults and children and acute, chronic and
end-of-life pain. The team employs evidence-based approaches in conjunction with advanced pain management techniques to help patients achieve optimal pain control and functionality. For example, the Division recently launched a pain medicine telemedicine service, which consists of an e-consultation service with rapid electronic consultative support and preoperative pain management consultations for opioid dependent patients. The Division also trains anesthesia residents, medical students and international visiting scholars.
