IOM Releases Report on IPE Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recently released a new report, "Measuring the Impact of Interprofessional Education on Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes."
There have been interest in linking uinterprofessional education (IPE) with interprofessional collaboration and team-based care. Recently researchers begun to look beyond the classroom and learning outcomes for the impact of IPE on issues such as: patient safety, patient and provider satisfaction, quality of care, health promotion, population health, and the cost of care.
In 2013, the IOM Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education held two workshops on IPE. Following the workshops, an IOM consensus committee examined the existing evidence on this complex issue and consider the potential design of future studies that could expand this evidence base.
