Protect Science - Don't Increase the Taxes on Education and Research
The House and Senate passed tax reform bills that can harm graduate students and universities and threaten scientific advancement. The House bill would repeal the provision of the tax code that makes tuition waivers tax free, which would result in increasing the tax burden faced by many graduate students. Both the House and Senate bills would levy a new a tax on selected university endowments, which would likely make higher education and graduate studies much more expensive for future generations of scientists.
As the House and Senate come together to decide on the final tax reform legislation, it is imperative that they reject these provisions. Contact your policymakers and tell them to protect institutional endowments and keep tuition waivers tax free for graduate students.
