Physical Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Pain Often As Effective as Surgery

A multicenter team of Spanish researchers conducted a randomized clinical trial to compare the one-year effectiveness of manual physical therapies, including desensitization maneuvers of the central nervous system, and surgery in patients with CTS. CTS surgery has the highest utilization rate among upper extremity procedures performed.

Sickle Cell Pain

At the American Society of Hematology meeting in November, attendees identified that chronic pain management is an significant need that hasn't been met for peope suffereing from sickle cell disease. Health care professionals and research organizations teamed up to discuss ways to improve collaboration between the groups.

IPRCC

The next meeting of the Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee (IPRCC) will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015. The meeting will feature invited speakers and discussions of committee business items including pain research updates from federal agencies and
discussion of a federal pain research strategy. The meeting will be open to the public and accessible by live webcast.

Pain Medicine on clinical pain practice

In a cohort of individuals on long-term opioid therapy for chronic non-cancer pain, greater opioid dose in oral morphine equivalents was associated with higher odds of mental health issues and concerning behaviors related to opioids.

Our Commitment

Today, the American Pain Society, a member of CO*RE,  joined the Obama Administration and a number of public and private sector partners to announce new efforts to address the prescription drug abuse and heroin epidemic. The President will highlight these efforts at an event in Charleston, West Virginia today where he will hear directly from individuals and families affected by this epidemic and the health care professionals, law enforcement officers, and community leaders working to prevent addiction and respond to its aftermath.

APS Response to CDC Draft Guidelines

We were a Stakeholder Review Group for the draft CDC Opioid Prescribing Guidelines and that the Opioid Issues Workgroup of the Public Policy Committee reviewed the document. We have elected to honor the request of the CDC in temporarily keeping both the Guidelines and our comments confidential in order to NOT create unnecessary dismay at a draft guideline that we have been assured is a first draft.

Remembering Dr. Willis

William D. Willis, Jr., M.D., Ph.D.

On September 15, 2015, the field of Neuroscience lost a giant and colleagues around the world mourned the passing of a friend, a gentleman and a scholar. After a long and very productive research career, William Darrell “Bill” Willis, Jr MD, PhD, 81, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of trainees and colleagues who were better scientists and better people for having known him.
