Cleveland Clinic’s Pain Medicine Fellowship Program is the largest and one of the most prestigious programs in the United States. The goal of our program is to train future leaders and consultants in pain management practice and research. Up to ten ACGME-approved positions are offered for a 12-month or 24-month fellowship in multidisciplinary pain medicine. The 24-month fellowship positions are offered to candidates with the potential to become future academic leaders of research and clinical care in pain management. This unique opportunity takes advantage of the internationally renowned leadership role of the Cleveland Clinic in interventional pain management and outcomes research within anesthesiology and pain medicine.
Fellows are valued colleagues in our multidisciplinary Pain Management team. We evaluate 100 to 120 patients and perform 50 to 60 interventional procedures daily, using state of the art technology and equipment in the Chronic Pain Management Center which has 20 examination rooms and 6 procedure suites. In addition, we admit patients to the hospital and provide monitored intrathecal and/or epidural infusion therapies. We also provide chronic and cancer pain inpatient consultation service to all specialties/departments of the Cleveland Clinic. We emphasize team work and strive to provide the highest quality of patient care, education, and research. Our team is composed of a large number of expert pain physicians, fellows, residents, physician assistants, nurses, and other supporting staff.

Description: The study team recently received funding to perform a 5 year study of chronic pain development among African Americans experiencing a motor vehicle collision (R01 AR060852). Individuals interested in developing an application with the PI to obtain a two year NIH Diversity Supplement to work at UNC with the investigative team as a post-doc on the research work of the grant are encouraged to email Dr. McLean at smclean@aims.unc.edu. Individuals with experience or interest in structural equation modeling are particularly encouraged. A minimum of 75% of the individual's time must be spent on research. Funding description of diversity supplement mechanism for post-docs: The NIH will provide support for salary in addition to other necessary expenses, such as travel and supplies, to enable the candidate to participate as a postdoctoral research assistant or associate on the funded research project. The requested salary and fringe benefits must be in accordance with the salary structure of the grantee institution, consistent with the level of effort, and may not exceed $50,000 per year. However, exceptions to this rule may be made. Applicants must check with their program administrators at the NIH before submitting an application. The supplement budget may include up to $6,000 for supplies and travel for the candidate. These funds may not be used to purchase equipment.

Fellows train in both interventional and medical approaches, and work with a variety of departments, including neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, palliative care, psychiatry, radiology, and others. Also, fellows have an elective month providing the opportunity to individualize the training experience.
There is a well-developed didactic pain medicine curriculum. Conferences focus on chronic pain, cancer pain, interventional and spine related pain, and many other topics. In addition, fellows have administrative and teaching responsibilities. They give lectures and prepare educational materials for residents and medical students rotating through the pain center.
