Every year APS rewards excellence in the field of pain management and research by presenting awards for career achievement, pain scholarship, education and public service, advocacy on behalf of children, outstanding service to APS, and early career achievemetns. The 2013 recipients of the prestigious APS annual achievement awards will receive their awards at the President's Recognition Reception, to be held, Thursday, May 9, 6:30—8:00 pm. The evening’s events will include a cocktail reception, remarks from the APS President, and an awards presentation.
The following awards will be presented: John and Emma Bonica Public Service Award, Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award, Frederick W. L. Kerr Basic Science Research Award, Jeffrey Lawson Award for Advocacy in Children’s Pain Relief, John C. Liebeskind Early Career Scholar Award, Elizabeth Narcessian Award for Outstanding Educational Achievements, Distinguished Service Award, Kathleen Foley Journalist Award, and the Clinical Centers of Excellence (CCOE) in Pain Management Awards. The Sharon S. Keller Chronic Research Pain Program grant recipients will also be recognized, and the Future Leaders in Pain Research grant recipients will be in attendance.![]() |
John and Emma Bonica Public Service Award Philip A. Pizzo, MD The John and Emma Bonica Public Service Award honors outstanding contributions by an individual or organization to the field of pain through public education, dissemination of information, public service, or other efforts to further knowledge about pain. The award is named for John Bonica, a leading force in the development of the pain treatment movement, and his wife, Emma. |

Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award William E. Maixner, PhD DDS The Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award and Lecture were established in 1995 to recognize and honor career achievement in clinical research on pain. The award has been named for Wilbert E. Fordyce, PhD, the first recipient of this honor. |

Frederick W. L. Kerr Basic Science Research Award Jeffrey S. Mogil, PhD The Frederick W. L. Kerr Basic Science Research Award and Lecture were established in 1987 in honor of Frederick W. L. Kerr, a founder of APS, to recognize individual excellence and achievement in pain scholarship. Since then, the Kerr medallion has been presented to 26 outstanding pain professionals—researchers and clinicians—whose career achievements have made important contributions to the field of pain. |

Clinical Centers of Excellence (CCOE) in Pain Management The Clinical Centers of Excellence in Pain Management Award (CCOE) honors programs or services that exemplify the provision of outstanding clinical care regardless of size. Any U.S.-based, interdisciplinary clinical program that provides direct patient care and is primarily focused on the treatment of pain is encouraged to apply. University-Based Program |

Sharon K. Keller Chronic Pain Research Grant
The Sharon S. Keller Grant was established this year by private investor David Keller in memory of his wife, Sharon Keller. This grant program is being established to fund research projects that have a high likelihood of leading to new treatments and increased access to and/or expansion of treatment options for people with chronic pain. The program will award up to four -year research grants in the amount of $35,000 for eligible APS members.

Future Leaders in Pain Research Grants
The 2012 Future Leaders in Pain Research Grants Program funds young investigators at the $15,000–$20,000 level. To be eligible, grant applicants must be APS members who are within 6 years of completion of their terminal degree and have not yet been awarded major National Institutes of Health or foundation grant funding.
