Plenary Lecture: Spinal Mechanisms of Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Neuropathic Pain: Implications for Novel Therapeutic Targets

Susan G. Dorsey, PhD RN FAAN

Chronic pain is a public health epidemic costing more than $600 billion for utilization of healthcare services and lost work wages, and often is resistant to conventional treatments. Patients with chronic pain are at risk of a decreased quality of life or an increased risk of opioid misuse and addiction. In many cases, chronic pain with a neuropathic component worsens over time.

Susan Dorsey’s research focuses on spinal cord injury (SCI)–induced neuropathic pain. The majority of SCI patients report long-lasting neuropathic pain at or below the level of the lesion and rate the intensity as moderate to severe.

Unfortunately, there is limited information regarding the mechanisms underlying SCI-induced chronic neuropathic pain and most pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies provide inadequate pain relief.

Given this, the identification of novel therapeutic targets that might be exploited to reduce or eliminate chronic SCI-induced pain is critically needed.

At Dr. Dorsey’s plenary lecture during the Summit, you will learn about tissue changes after SCI, what those changes do to limit regeneration and contribute to neuropathic pain, and Dorsey’s study of the role of tropomyosin-related kinase B T1 in SCI-induced neuropathic pain.

New Preconference Event—Building Blocks

Primary care clinicians, pain medicine and behavioral specialists, and clinical directors and administrators can explore the concrete steps necessary to implement an effective, interdisciplinary, office-based pain management practice while utilizing evidence-based treatment. Preregistration is required; there is a $100 fee to attend.

Late-Breaking Posters to be accepted in January

The APS Scientific Program Committee recognizes the results of some exciting research were not available by the general abstract submission deadline of September 4, 2017. Hence, APS is offering a late-breaking abstract deadline for abstracts that highlight novel and substantive studies that are completed after the general abstract submission deadline. Keep an eye out for dates of the call to be announced in December!

Call for Proposals—ACTTION Session at APS Summit

If you are a junior investigator planning a clinical research study, you are invited to submit a summary of proposed research to the ACTTION-APS workshop. This is a great opportunity to obtain constructive feedback to improve research design and execution, and a chance to receive a $1,250 honorarium to support attendance of the APS meeting in Anaheim. Submit your proposal before November 30 for a chance to be selected as a workshop participant.
