APS Announces the Sharon S. Keller Chronic Pain Research Program

The American Pain Society is pleased to announce the inaugural launch of the Sharon S. Keller Chronic Pain Research Program. This grants program has been established to fund research projects that have a high likelihood of leading to new treatments, increased access to/and or expansion of treatment options for people with chronic pain. This year up to four grants of $35,000 will be awarded to fund projects demonstrating the greatest merit and potential for success.

Deadlines:

The submission deadline for the Sharon Keller Grant has passed. Funds will be awarded for a twenty-four month grant period that will begin upon satisfactory execution of the grant agreement between APS and the sponsoring institution, and the receipt of IRB/IACUC approval.

Research Topics:

Proposed research projects should investigate non-invasive interventions with favorable side effect profiles to improve chronic pain management. Projects should be designed to provide novel information regarding treatment efficacy or the mechanisms thereof. Areas of inquiry considered responsive to this grant program include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical treatments for pain (e.g. manual therapy, rehabilitation, brain stimulation)
  • Psychological treatments for pain (e.g. cognitive-behavioral interventions, neurofeedback)
  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM, e.g. acupuncture, massage therapy)
  • Coordinated care, including combinations of the above approaches
  • Community based interventions and psycho-educational programs that improve access to pain management, especially to underprivileged.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for an APS Sharon S. Keller Chronic Pain Research Grant, applicants must be:

  • APS members
  • Within six years of completing their doctoral degree, and
  • Not yet been awarded major NIH or foundation grant funding (R01 and or equivalent)
  • Previous APS grant recipients are eligible to apply, but previous funding from an APS sponsored mechanism will be taken into final consideration in the award of otherwise highly meritorious applications.
  • Current grant recipients from another APS sponsored mechanism are not eligible to apply.

Grant Budget and Grantee Obligations:

  • Eligible grant expenses may include Principal Investigator salary but not institutional overhead.
  • Grant Recipients are required to submit a one page written interim progress report to the committee.
  • Grant Recipients are not eligible to apply for 2013 or 2014 APS Young Investigator Travel Awards.
  • As part of the award, Grant Recipients will receive a $1,000 Travel Stipend to attend the APS Annual Meeting.
  • Indicating travel expenses in the Grant Budget to attend the 2015 APS Annual Meeting is required. Grant Recipients will be required to submit an abstract and present their research during a paper session.
  • Investigators are required to submit their final results to APS for abstract presentation at the next Annual Meeting in accordance with the terms of the grant agreement.
  • Grant Recipients are required to complete a survey every year for three years to report the outcomes of their research.
