Message from the President

We’re only weeks away from the APS Annual Scientific Meeting. I’d like to invite you to attend for the same reasons I’ve attended this meeting for so many years. The Annual Scientific Meeting keeps me at the forefront of advances in pain science and treatment.

The value of the APS meeting has been on my mind, and I’ve been looking at it from a variety of perspectives. The meeting offers attendees opportunities to connect and network with colleagues from across the country. Whether you are new in your career, established as a mid-career professional, or more seasoned, the meeting provides something for everyone in our field. It’s the best place to gain a deeper understanding of the lifecycle of a treatment option—starting with basic science, progressing into clinical research, and finally available to the patient in pain.

The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) put together an energizing meeting that brings together first-rate science and unites the pain community with content, speakers, and attendees that are unmatched elsewhere.

New and returning events you don’t want to miss this year include

  • "The Fundamentals of Translational Pain Medicine: Integrating Science into Clinical Care"—Dr. Charles Argoff has reinvented the program to make the course dynamic and interactive; this is a great opportunity for students, trainees, and early career professionals.
  • APS-CAT—After a successful year in 2016, APS-CAT is back and will focus on optimizing the design and conduct of analgesic clinical trials.
  • Lifestyle Medicine, Past the Holes in Holism—A keynote address from Dr. David Katz
  • "Chronic Opioid Therapy: Where Should We Draw the Line? A Panel Discussion"
  • National Pain Strategy Presentation: "What's Next for Pain Initiatives at the Federal Level?" Linda Porter, PhD; Thomas Novotny, MD MPH

Additionally, there will be 27 symposia from more than 80 speakers and nearly 375 posters. I hope to see you in Pittsburgh, May 17–20, 2017.

Session Spotlight

Chronic Opioid Therapy: Where Should We Draw the Line?

Join us for an important and thought-provoking panel discussion regarding the use of chronic opioid therapy as a treatment for chronic pain. A balanced panel will discuss the complex issue of whether or not chronic opioids should be used, and if so, within what limitations?

We invite all attendees to submit questions for our panelists to review prior to the meeting. Deadline to submit questions is Monday, May 8. You will also have the opportunity to interact with panelists during the debate by submitting live questions and following the Twitter discussion #apspanel with @AmericanPainSoc.

The panel will take place at the Annual Scientific Meeting on Friday, May 19, 12:45-1:45pm. We look forward to your participation!

Featured Clinical and Basic Science Abstracts

New to this year’s scientific programming are the Featured Basic Science Abstracts and Featured Clinical Abstracts symposia. The 2017 Scientific Program Committee reviewed more than 400 poster abstracts this year and identified six basic science and six clinical abstracts to be featured as part of the accredited schedule. Each symposium will consist of the six featured poster abstracts with authors presenting for 10 minutes followed by 5 minutes of Q&A. Preconference Sessions

Spring Pain

The Spring Pain conference is an independent collection of scientists dedicated to open discussion of original, unpublished research. Be the first to hear presentations of original, not yet published research being conducted in the basic and clinical pain sciences. See the full schedule of events on the Spring Pain website!

Registration (available on the APS website) is $160 for members and $175 for nonmembers and includes breakfast, lunch, refreshments, and a reception.

Fundamentals of Pain Management: Integrating Science into Clinical Care

The Fundamentals Course provides a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary learning, exposure to the Annual Scientific Meeting, and a foundation for lifelong learning in pain science and pain medicine.

"The Fundamentals of Translational Pain Medicine: Integrating Science into Clinical Care" will be held prior to the start of the 36th Annual Scientific Meeting on Tuesday, May 16, and Wednesday, May 17, and will provide participants an opportunity to increase their interest in this specialty and enhance their professional practice.

NEW to Fundamentals in 2017 is self-study prework to ready participants for the live interactive program. The live program features didactic instruction with application to optimize transferability of learning into practice.

Preregistration is required. The cost for Fundamentals is $350. Group discounts available for Groups of 3 or more. Contact Member Services at 847.375.4715 for complete details. CE/CME credit is not offered for this course.


As a followup to 2016’s first APS Conference on Analgesic Trials (APS-CAT), APS will present the second annual APS-CAT on May 17, 2017. This event will be chaired and moderated by Neil Singla, MD, who is the APS Clinical Trials special interest group chair and chief scientific officer of Lotus Clinical Research.

APS-CAT is a full-day conference focused on optimizing the design and conduct of analgesic clinical trials. APS-CAT 2016 hosted 200 pain research professionals for expert presentations and a Q&A session with an eight-member panel. Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Registration is $100 and includes lunch and refreshments.
